Join a guided hike on Austre Okstindbreen, one of Norway's oldest glaciers, and explore the striking mountain landscape of the Okstindan range. This moderate hike is suited for those with some hiking experience and includes glacier safety training with experienced guides.
This guided tour takes you to Austre Okstindbreen, a glacier believed to be one of the first to return after the last Ice Age, around 9,000 years ago. The hike begins from the Leirbekkhaugen parking area, followed by a 1.5-hour walk through varied terrain to reach the glacier front.
At the edge of the glacier, your guide will provide instruction in using crampons and ice axes, along with safe glacier travel techniques. The hike is adapted to the group’s level and weather conditions, ensuring both safety and a rich learning experience.
As you cross the glacier, you’ll see deep blue crevasses and dramatic ice formations, with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including Oksskolten – the highest mountain in Northern Norway. This experience offers a combination of learning, hiking, and natural beauty in the heart of Helgeland.
The full tour duration is approximately 6–8 hours, including the hike to and from the glacier. Participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable hiking in mountainous terrain.
